Garden Treasures of the North (Weekend)
Itinerary
| Thursday | We meet at our comfortable hotel for a welcome lunch and chance to meet your holiday leader and companions and learn more about the treats in store. We then leave for a private visit to Kilcoy Castle's gardens on the Black Isle (not normally open to the public). Features to admire include fine mature trees, a walled garden with beautifully-planted herbaceous borders and extensive terraced lawns overlooking the Beauly Firth. We return to our comfortable hotel in Inverness for dinner. |
| Friday | We head east this morning to Ballindalloch Castle with its attractive rock gardens and walled rose gardens. After lunch, we visit Cawdor Castle with its fine herbaceous borders and fascinating walled garden where surprises await around every corner. We return to Inverness for dinner. |
| Saturday | We leave Inverness this morning and set off for Inverewe Garden on the West Coast. This spectacular garden on the shores of Loch Ewe was created in 1865 and offers a treasure trove of walks through herbaceous and rock gardens, vegetable gardens, a wet valley and, of course, the famous Inverewe rhododendrons and azaleas. We then head northwards through magnificent Wester Ross scenery to enjoy the beauty of Loch Broom before reaching our hotel in Ullapool in time for dinner. |
| Sunday | It's further north this morning through stunning Sutherland mountain and sea-loch scenery to Kylesku. Here we board the MV Statesman for our half-hour journey to Kerrachar Garden, located on a former croft by the shore and lovingly planted and tended for the past five years. Here you will find an array of herbaceous plants whose range and superb condition belie the harsh sea winds which can lash them in winter. Returning to Kylesku by boat, we have lunch then head back to Inverness, arriving at 3.30pm to allow you to continue your journey home. |
