The Highland Clearances Trail (Week)

This holiday will give you a first-hand insight into the Highland Clearances - the large-scale emigration from the Highlands in the 18th and 19th Centuries which saw countless Highlanders leave their native glens to build new lives around the world. An expertly-designed and led itinerary will show you how life was lived in the Highlands before the Clearances, explain the factors which triggered the evictions, and take you to experience key Clearance locations for yourself.

Highlights
  • Visit to the award-winning Highland Folk Museum in Newtonmore to experience how Highlanders of the past lived and worked.
  • Expertly-guided visits to key sites associated with Highland emigration in the 18th and 19th Centuries, including Culloden Battlefield, Fort George, Strathnaver, Dunrobin Castle and Croick Church.
  • This tour combines the story of the Highland Clearances with some of the most beautiful scenery in the North of Scotland - an unforgettable experience and unique opportunity to learn about the events which saw Highlanders leave home in huge numbers to make new lives around the world.
Other useful information
At outdoor locations, little walking is involved. There are some styles to cross in Strathnaver. The walk up Ben Bhraggie is more strenuous but optional. Wheelchair access is generally not a problem, although it is not possible to take wheelchairs right around the sites in Strathnaver and Badbea because of the terrain. Please bring waterproof jacket and shoes/boots suitable for walking on short stretches of field or moorland.
